Clinical Department
Digestive Diseases Center
The Center helps in early detection and treatment by taking advantage of the latest testing equipment such as PET- CT, IVR-CT and contrast-enhanced ultrasonography to discover even microscopic lesion of esophagus cancer, stomach cancer, colon cancer and gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GIST) as well as liver cancer, gallbladder cancer, bile duct cancer and pancreas cancer, early diagnosis of which is generally believed to be difficult.
Aside from cancer, the Center also provides treatment for a variety of gastrointestinal diseases, including gastric and duodenal ulcers, gastroenteritis, cholelithiasis, hepatitis and hepatocirrhosis.
Cardiovascular Center
The Cardiovascular Center consists of cardiovascular internal medicine, cardiosurgery and vascular surgery, making it possible to detect diseases from multifaceted viewpoints beyond the categories of surgery and internal medicine. The Center has in place an environment to safely and surely provide high-quality medical care with cutting-edge medical equipment and a lineup of good doctors for irregular heartbeat and high blood pressure, as well as cardiac angina and cardiac infarction, which have now been regarded as national lifestyle-related diseases, and such organic heart diseases as valvular disorder and cardiomyopathy.
The Center constantly offers sophisticated medical technologies, such as percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) treatment, electrophysiological study (EPS) of arrhythmias and ablation therapy for arrhythmias with a high rate of success. It has also systemized surgical preparations for cardiovascular diseases that are difficult to treat through internal medicine, and tries to offer surgical procedures as soon as practicable after the diagnosis is confirmed.
At the Center, cardiovascular internal medicine, cardiosurgery and vascular surgery cooperate and try to provide individual patients with custom-made medical care, offering patient- oriented team medicine at all times.
Cardiac SurgerySpine and Spinal Cord Center
At the Spine and Spinal Cord Center of Mita Hospital, orthopedic surgeons and neurosurgeons provide medical care as a single team by taking down the barriers between them for the purpose, above all, of offering "patient-oriented medical services." The Center's staff, led by supervisory doctors, strives to provide patients and family members with explanations in an easy-to-understand manner and aims to offer convincing medical care. While the number of patients who visit the Center for the first time comes to over 3,000 each year, the number of surgeries conducted on them stands at only around 400. These results from the Center's treatment policy that we pay heed to the viewpoints of patients and hold consultations with them, and conduct surgeries only on patients who require them.
The most important thing in the treatment of spinal diseases is to determine whether a surgery, which is the last resort, would truly bring about a satisfactory curative effect to a patient. We consider it most important to perform a detailed examination and make an evaluation of not only abnormal findings in X-ray and MRI images but also psychogenic factors such as a sense of anxiety and stress and the living environment.
Orthopedics
The Department of Orthopedics has a medical care system in place to deal with diseases and injuries of all locomotive organs, including the upper extremity (hands, elbows and shoulders) and the lower extremity (hip joint, knees and feet) (Spine and spinal cord diseases are examined at the Spine and Spinal Cord Center). We particularly focus on joint surgeries, with the number of surgeries going over 300 annually. The Department strives to perform the less invasive implant installation in an accurate manner.
Joint replacement surgeries for osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis that arise at knee joints and hip joints have become reliable surgeries both functionally and over the long term thanks to improvements in implant materials, designs and surgery techniques.
For athletic injuries such as injuries to anterior cruciate ligaments of the knee and meniscus injuries, we perform the ligament reconstructive technique and meniscus restoration technique (or partial resection) using a knee arthroscope. By providing less invasive treatment using an arthroscope, we extensively take care of recreation-level as well as professional-level athletes, preparing them for the return to their favorite sports.
We have established the special clinics for foot surgery and hand surgery, where experienced medical specialists provide patients with diagnosis and treatment.
Head and Neck Oncology Center
The Head and Neck Oncology Center specializes in the medical care of head and neck cancer, head and neck tumors, parotid gland tumors, parapharyngeal space tumors and thyroid gland tumors. The Center features the realization of "team medicine" by specialists from discharge from the hospital to social reintegration as well as in hospital, and the strengthening of postoperative rehabilitation.
The treatment of head and neck cancer has an impact on voice, language and masticatory functions. In order to keep disabilities and aftereffects stemming from treatment to the minimum and facilitate early discharge from the hospital and ensure patients can quickly return to their daily routines, the Center incorporates high-level multimodality medical care as well as post-treatment functional recovery training by specialists (mastication, swallowing, voice and language) as part of treatment.
Skull Base Surgery Center
The skull base is the deepest part of the face and the head that supports the brain from underneath at the core of the skull (Photo 1). It is where the nerves and blood vessels are intricately-packed and is also related to the activity of the brain that maintains the essential part of life. Diseases that require skull base surgeries are broadly divided into (1) those that are there all along in a skull such as brain tumors that grow out of the skull base and (2) those where nasal cavity cancer and nasal sinus cancer, etc. progress deeper to reach the skull base.
Since very sophisticated techniques are required to reach the skull base without injuring the brain, there are currently only an extremely small number of doctors specializing in skull base surgery. Thus, many patients come to the Center from across Japan.
Transplant Surgery
The Department provides not only surgical treatment for renal insufficiency (renal transplant, vascular access- related surgery) but also surgical treatment for all internal organs in a cross-cutting manner. Thus, we also proactively conduct surgeries on sarcoma and retroperitoneal tumors that occur frequently in the abdomen and the pelvic region. Furthermore, we provide a variety of surgical treatment for patients with renal insufficiency (secondary hyperparathyroidism, stomach cancer, colon cancer and polycystic kidney disease, etc.).
Diseases covered by the Department include renal transplants, abdominal and pelvic tumors (incipient, recurrent and metastatic sarcoma, and retroperitoneal tumors etc.), vascular access troubles (internal shunt obstruction, blood circulation disorders and puncture difficulties, etc.), and a variety of diseases with renal insufficiency (secondary hyperparathyroidism, stomach cancer, colon cancer, polycystic kidney disease and acute abdominal condition, etc.)
Respiratory Diseases Center
The Respiratory Diseases Center comprehensively deals with lung cancer and all other respiratory diseases, with surgical and internal medicine specialists forming teams. The Center conducts safe surgeries and less invasive treatment with the high rate of permanent cure for early lung cancer, and molecular target treatment and other chemotherapies (anticancer drug treatment) as well as radiation therapy and other multimodality therapies for advanced lung cancer, also providing outpatient chemotherapy and radiation therapy to meet the patients' needs. The Center also has in place the system under which specialists diagnose a wide variety of respiratory diseases, including diffuse pulmonary diseases, such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and interstitial pneumonia, as well as bronchial asthma, pneumonia and respiratory tract infection like influenza. It places an emphasis on the diagnosis of sleep apnea syndrome and CRAP therapy.
Emergency Department
Mita Hospital has been making regional contributions as a secondary emergency medical institution designated by the Tokyo Metropolitan Government, and we newly established the Emergency Department in March 2015. Doctors from the Emergency Department personally diagnose patients brought in between 8:30 and 17:30, and an interactive network is in place to have specialists from various clinical departments take over patients for professional diagnosis, hospitalization and surgeries if necessary. After 17:30 on weekdays and Sundays, the four-member team of one physician, one surgeon, one doctor in charge of intensive care unit management and one doctor-in-training are on standby to receive emergency patients.
Breast Center
Breast cancer shows few early symptoms, such as lack of appetite and deconditioning, and if neglected for a long period of time, the cancer cells grow proliferously and develop systemic metastasis, decreasing the probability of full recovery. In order to avoid this situation, it is important to discover breast cancer early and commence therapy. The Breast Center diagnoses and follows up on those with high risk of carrying genes for hereditary breast cancer, etc. and those with less clear transmissibility but have many relatives with breast cancer in accordance with the risk- reduction and screening guidelines of the U.S. National Comprehensive Cancer Network (NCCN)
Gynecologic Oncology Center / Gynecology
The Gynecology Center places a particular emphasis on medical care for gynecological tumors, among a variety of therapies for women. Gynecological tumors are broadly divided into malignant tumors (cancer) and benign tumors (uterine fibroid and endometriosis, etc.). In treating body organs unique to women, such as uteri and ovaries, we strive to provide medical care by taking both "permanent cure" and "functional preservation" into full account. Diseases covered by the Gynecology Center include endocervical cancer, cervical dysplasia, uterine body cancer, endometrial hyperplasia, ovary cancer, uterine fibroid, ovarian cyst and endometriosis.
Urology
The number of patients suffering from urological diseases, such as prostate diseases and bladder dysfunction, is on the rise. The Department of Urology proposes the latest modality of treatment suitable for respective symptoms of or requests by individual patients, including surgical therapies or surgeries, radiation therapies and pharmacological therapies. With the aim of the early social reintegration of patients, laparoscopic operations for prostate cancer and a variety of diseases including stomach cancer, renal pelvic and ureteral cancer, and adrenal tumors are performed by doctors certified in urologic laparoscopy by the Japanese Society of Endourology.
Lithotripsy Center
Kidney stones, ureteral stones, bladder stones and urethral stones are collectively called urinary calculosis. There are a variety of causes for urinary calculosis, which is considered as one of lifestyle-related diseases and increasing particularly among males in their 30s-60s in Japan. If neglected, any urinary stone could hamper the flow of urine and ultimately damage the function of kidneys.
The Center not only uses extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy (ESWL) but also proactively employs two other techniques that use endoscope, transurethral lithotripsy (TUL and f-TUL) and percutaneous nephrolithotripsy (PNL), giving heed to recovering the flow of urine as quickly as possible and appropriately maintaining the activity of kidneys.
Neurology
The Department covers diseases of the brain, spinal cord, peripheral nerves and muscles. More specifically, we accurately diagnose and appropriately treat such diseases as cerebrovascular diseases, Parkinson's disease, spinocerebellar degeneration, Guillain–Barré syndrome, myositis and muscular dystrophy, by diagnostic imaging, neurophysiological tests and blood biochemical tests, in addition to precise neurological examinations. For rehabilitation from the aftereffects of cerebrovascular diseases, the Department's head and other staff with ample expertise deal with often troublesome higher brain dysfunctions such as problems with speech, writing, and language comprehension, agnosia (the loss of the ability to recognize objects, faces, voices, or places) and hemispatial neglect (inability to pay attention to sensory stimuli to one side of the body's awareness).
Internal Medicine (Nephrology and Hypertension)
Mita Hospital is designated as a certified training facility by both the Japanese Society of Nephrology and the Japanese Society of Hypertension, and supervisory doctors and specialists certified by both societies examine patients each day. As kidney diseases and hypertension are closely related, early and appropriate medical care is necessary. The Department has been providing meticulous guidance for lifestyle habits for preventing chronic kidney diseases. Those who test positive for proteinuria or are found to have possible impaired renal function are advised to visit us.
he Department also offers specialized medical care for hypertension, the core factor related to kidney diseases, and we provide patients with dietary instructions, particularly low-salt diet, and blood-pressure control by 24-hour ambulatory blood pressure monitoring. Primary aldosteronism, which causes hypertension due to excess secretion of hormone from the adrenal gland, advances arterial sclerosis if overlooked, and leads to the brain, heart, kidney and blood vessel impairment. We advise hypertension patients to feel free to visit us and receive accurate screening performed by specialists
Internal Medicine (Diabetes and Endocrine metabolism)
Diabetes specialists and endocrine metabolism specialists provide medical care mainly for type 1 and type 2 diabetes, lifestyle-related diseases such as metabolic syndrome, and thyroid diseases (Graves' disease and Hashimoto's disease). We use blood tests, hormone tests, ultrasound testing and diagnostic imaging, etc. for the diagnosis.
Diabetes requires lifelong care, but diabetic patients can live in the same way as healthy people by receiving continuous, appropriate treatment. The Department provides initial education on lifestyle-related diseases and strives to prevent the progression of symptoms and complications. Doctors, nurses qualified as certified diabetes educators, pharmacists and national registered dietitians, and other experts form teams to offer medical care.
For outpatients, we provide insulin injections and foot care, distribute educational pamphlets and also emphasize education and guidance by holding classes for diabetics.
Pediatrics
The Department of Pediatrics provides medical care for illnesses diseases common among children, such as colds and gastroenteritis, and also proactively offers health examinations of infants and preventive injections. Specialists deal with allergy-based diseases, such as food allergies, atopic dermatitis and bronchial asthma, and offer blood tests, skin testing (prick tests), respiratory function tests, hyposensitization therapy and food load tests to the extent possible for outpatients. At our specialized clinic for outpatients, doctors specializing in neurological diseases such as epilepsia and cerebral palsy provide medical care for outpatients. We also place an emphasis on medical care for children with developmental impairment, such as autism and hyperactivity disorder.
Plastic Surgery
“Plastic” of plastic surgery department derived from the Greek word “plastikos ", able to be molded. Plastic surgery department mainly provides the treatment of the visible areas of the body and focuses on the shape related to the visible areas of the body. For example, we treat injuries, facial disfigurement and provide reconstruction after surgical resection of tumors. We, “the specialist of skin and face procedure”, provide full range of treatment to meet the needs of patients from minor injuries to breast reconstruction. . Examples of the treatment we offer:

Dermatology
The Department examines dermatological symptoms throughout the body, including atopic dermatitis, eczema, psoriasis, acne, trichophytia, alopecia, herpes, skin bacterial virus infection, connective tissue disease, drug rash, burn injuries and skin tumors. Some dermatological diseases are difficult to diagnose by ordinary examinations alone. In those cases, we strive to make a comprehensive diagnosis by also conducting skin biopsies, blood sampling and diagnostic imaging.
We introduced the narrow-band UVB irradiator for total- body irradiation. Narrow-band UVB irradiation is effective in the treatment of psoriasis, atopic dermatitis and vitiligo vulgaris, and it has a great advantage of not causing systemic adverse effects. Irradiation methods are varied depending on diseases. Please visit us first, and then we will propose an irradiation method suitable for each patient.
Otorhinolaryngology (E.N.T)

We have specialized outpatient clinics for impaired hearing, hearing aids, vertigo and voice. Japan's top-level doctors are in charge of the specialized clinic for impaired hearing, while the specialized clinic for voice is supervised by doctors of the Tokyo Voice Center of the International University of Health and Welfare.
he Department also proactively provides conservative medical management and surgeries on allergic rhinitis, chronic sinusitis (empyema) and other nose and sinus diseases. All nasal operations are done endoscopically. We strive to perform operations that reduce post-surgical pain and shorten the duration of hospitalization as much as possible. We also provide sublingual immunotherapy for pollen disease, which has received widespread attention in recent years. Please feel free to contact us if you wish to learn more about this therapy.
Auditory, Cochlear Implant Center
The Center proactively performs tympanoplasty and myringoplasty for impaired hearing due to perforation of tympanum or otopyorrhea (chronic otitis media and chronic otitis media with cholesteatoma), and stapes surgery for impaired hearing due to otosclerosis, the hardening of auditory ossicles that transmit sounds. In order to shorten the duration of hospitalization, we conduct a variety of surgeries using an endoscope with a good track record.
The Center is one of the best in Japan in the field of artificial auditory apparatuses. Artificial auditory apparatuses include artificial inner ears, artificial inner ears that use remaining hearing, artificial middle ears and bone-conduction implants. There are only a handful of medical facilities in Japan that are capable of performing all relevant surgeries.
Ophthalmology
The most common age-related ailment is cataract. The cataract is the opacification of the crystalline lens that serves as a lens of an eye, and occurs to almost everybody. With technological progress, cataract surgery has recently been considered as one of the refractive surgeries that also cures astigmatism and presbytism, and thus, we strongly urge cataract patients to undergo this surgery. We are also seeing a very large number of retinal diseases, such as preretinal membrane and age-related macular degeneration, and glaucoma. Recently, it has become possible to capture very tiny changes at an early stage with a three-dimensional examination method using the optical interference tomographic meter, while new medical therapies and less invasive surgical treatment are progressing.
The Department of Ophthalmology also launched the intraocular implantable contact lens (ICL) operation as a way for the correction of nearsightedness among youth. This method was developed some 20 years ago, but after a host of improvements, it is currently drawing keen attention as a safe method to treat severe nearsightedness and astigmatism. Please contact us if you feel constrained by eyeglasses or contact lenses.
Rehabilitation Center
In rehabilitation medical care, it is important to improve a variety of disabilities and disturbances to daily life arising from them, and to enhance the quality of life (QOL). The Center has satisfied all facility criteria for rehabilitation for each disease adapted in 2006: (1) rehabilitation from cerebrovascular diseases, (2) rehabilitation of locomotive organs, (3) rehabilitation of respiratory organs, (4) rehabilitation from major cardiovascular diseases; and (5) rehabilitation for cancer patients, added in FY2010. In close cooperation of various clinical departments, we provide high-quality rehabilitation medical care mindful of the QOL of individual patients.
Psychiatry
The Department offers medical care for psychiatric diseases among adults in general. In particular, we provide pharmaceutical therapies and psychological therapies for patients with depression, bipolar disorder, panic disorders, social anxiety, dissociative disorders, eating disorders and sleep disorders, etc. We have the referral-based appointment system. For an appointment for your first visit, please come with a document offering treatment information. We do not offer special programs for alcohol or drug dependence. Since the Department does not have inpatient facilities, we refer patients to appropriate hospitals when hospitalization is deemed necessary.
Anesthesiology
Our goal is to provide high-quality anesthesia to each patient. We make sure to deliver better anesthesia for speedy recovery from surgery and have smooth transition back to home.
In order to achieve that goal, preoperative assessment is performed to make a plan for the operation that takes into account the individual needs of the patient. A group of anesthesiologists that consists of at least one physician anesthesiologist certified by the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare will take care of a patient during surgery and better react to unexpected circumstances. Gathering updated information from all corners of Japan and the globe, we thrive to improve the quality of anesthesia.
Our staffs are periodically attending CPR training courses to treat patients at the emergency department as well. We give detailed information to patients and open to any questions you may have.
Dentistry, Oral Implant and Oral Surgery
The Department takes care of a wide range of diseases within the oral cavity. Aside from cavities, we deal with a variety of disorders and diseases, including wisdom tooth extraction, oral mucosal diseases like stomatitis, tumors, pustules, malocclusion and jaw deformity that require surgical correction, jaw arthritis that causes pain in opening the mouth wide, inflammations and injuries of teeth and jawbones, and congenital anomaly, etc.
We also place an emphasis on implants, procedures to implant artificial dental roots into the jaw in place of one's own teeth lost and form prosthetic teeth on them.
Radiology - Radiodiagnostics Center
Diagnostic imaging plays a very large part in modern medical care, and CT and MRI are diagnosis devices indispensable for accurately grasping clinical conditions and determining treatment strategies. Radiologists, as specialists in diagnostic imaging, are striving to practice reassuring medical care by preparing diagnostic reports that are easy to understand and useful for clinical practices. The Picture Archiving and Communication System (PACS) is used for all diagnoses, and all in-hospital diagnostic reports are prepared using the dedicated radiograph interpretation equipment. Furthermore, part or all of cases of CT, MRI and mammography images taken at affiliated facilities, including International University of Health and Welfare (IUHW) Hospital, Shioya IUHW Hospital, Atami IUHW Hospital, Ichikawa IUHW Hospital and Sanno Medical Center, are being interpreted by the parallel use of the remote diagnostic imaging system.
Radiology - Radiation Therapy / Nuclear Medicine Center Radiation Therapy Division
Radiation therapy is one of the therapies to combat malignant tumors, and is an important modality of therapy along with surgical therapy, such as operations and chemotherapy (anticancer drugs). Specialists in radiation therapy receive outpatients and develop appropriate radiation therapies in accordance with the pathological conditions of individual patients, ensuring quality and safe treatment. We also provide treatment to mitigate cancer-related pain stemming from bone metastasis.
Nuclear Medicine
We utilize PET-CT for the staging and the diagnosis of metastasis and recurrence of cancer. In 2010, the health insurance coverage of adaptation diseases for PET-CT examination was expanded to all cancer diagnoses except for early-stage stomach cancer, with its role increasingly gaining in importance.
In general nuclear medicine, we offer a wide range of examinations, including the early diagnosis of bone metastasis of cancer using bone scintigraphy, cardiac nuclear medicine that diagnoses angina pectoris and cardiac infarction, brain nuclear medicine that diagnoses dementia and cerebrovascular diseases, and respiratory nuclear medicine that diagnoses pulmonary embolism.
Diagnostic Pathology Center
The Department of Diagnostic Pathology undertakes diagnostic pathology (tissue diagnosis, intraoperative rapid diagnosis and cytoscreening) at its Center. In recent years, molecularly-targeted therapy has been introduced as malignant tumor therapy, and genetic alteration is regarded as important in predicting the therapy's effects. At the request of clinical departments, the Center's molecular diagnostic pathology room performs gene analysis for breast cancer and lung cancer, etc. to enable the prompt commencement of correct treatment. We also have a clinic for diagnostic pathology second opinions for outpatients who wish to receive more detailed knowledge of the content of diagnostic pathology.
